Why Your Crew’s Hats Should Be as Tough as Their Work

There’s a specific kind of pride you feel when you’re driving through Lufkin or Nacogdoches and you see a crew out there getting the job done. Whether they’re clearing timber, fixing an AC unit in the dead of July, or pouring a new foundation, those guys are the backbone of our community here in East Texas. But as any business owner around here knows, the work is hard, and the environment is even harder.

Down here in Shelbyville, we don't just deal with "warm" weather; we deal with that thick, heavy humidity that makes everything stick and a sun that seems determined to bake the life out of whatever you’re wearing. I’ve seen enough "branded" hats come through my shop that looked like they’d been through a war zone after just a few weeks on a job site. Faded logos, peeling edges, and stitching that’s unraveling faster than a cheap sweater.

That’s why I started doing things a little differently at Burl Wood Designs. When we talk about "Tough Crew" gear, we aren’t just talking about a logo on a cap. We’re talking about a piece of equipment that works as hard as the person wearing it.

The Reality of the East Texas Job Site

If you’re running a landscaping crew in Marshall or a plumbing business in Shreveport, your guys are your walking billboards. Every time they talk to a customer or grab a coffee at the gas station, your logo is right there on their forehead. But if that logo is starting to peel or look raggedy, what is that saying about your business?

I’ve talked to plenty of local owners who were tired of buying a fresh batch of hats every three months because the patches wouldn't stay on. They’d try the standard embroidered hats, but those tend to get stained with sweat and dirt, and once that thread starts to pull, the whole thing is ruined. Then they’d try those cheap iron-on patches, and well... we all know how that ends. One afternoon in the 100-degree heat and that patch is sliding off like butter on a hot biscuit.

Why We Don’t Stitch (And Why You’ll Thank Us)

One of the questions I get asked most often when folks walk into the shop or text me is, "Hey Mike, do you stitch these patches on?"

And my answer is always the same: Absolutely not.

Now, I know what you might be thinking. You’ve been told your whole life that stitching is the only way to make something last. But here’s the truth about custom hats for hard-working crews: every time you put a needle through a hat and a patch, you’re creating thousands of tiny little holes. You’re weakening the material. And for a guy who’s sweating all day, those holes are just entry points for moisture and salt to get in and start breaking things down.

Instead, we use a process that I’ve spent a lot of time perfecting. We use Lonestar Durabull adhesive. This isn't your craft-store glue. This is an industrial-grade, heat-activated bond that was designed specifically for the kind of punishment our local crews put their gear through.

When we apply a leatherette patch using the Durabull process, it doesn't just sit on top of the hat: it becomes part of it. We use high-pressure heat presses that fuse that adhesive deep into the fibers of the Richardson 112s or whatever hat style you prefer. The result? A bond that is actually stronger than the fabric itself. It won't peel, it won't lift at the corners, and it certainly won't fail when the humidity hits 90%. We’re so confident in this adhesive that we ditched stitching entirely. It looks cleaner, it lasts longer, and it keeps your logo looking sharp through the dirt, the grease, and the wash.

Real Gear for Real Local Businesses

We aren’t some big faceless factory in another state. We’re right here in Shelbyville, and we love seeing our work out in the wild.

Take a look at the Straightlines Body Works hats we just finished up. Those folks put their gear through the kind of daily wear and tear that really tests whether a hat is built to last. They needed something that looked sharp, professional, and clean, but was still tough enough to hold up through long days on the job. We went with a custom leatherette patch that holds that crisp, laser-engraved detail perfectly. You can see the precision in the logo: that’s the beauty of our laser process. You get detail that embroidery just can't match, and with that Durabull bond, those patches aren't going anywhere.

Custom leatherette business patches featuring HVAC and service company branding

We’ve also been doing a lot of work for local HVAC businesses. If there’s anyone who knows about heat, it’s those guys. We’ve created a variety of leatherette patches in different tones: from that classic Saddle Tan to a rugged Charcoal: that let their branding pop. Whether they want a vintage look or something modern and sleek, the leatherette holds up against the chemicals and grime they deal with daily.

Built Right Here in Shelbyville

There’s something special about doing business with your neighbors. When you call Burl Wood Designs, you’re talking to me. I’m the one making sure the laser is calibrated just right, and I’m the one checking every single hat before it goes out the door.

We take a lot of pride in helping businesses in Center, Carthage, and all across the East Texas and Louisiana corridor. We know that for a small business owner, every dollar counts. You don't want to waste money on gear that’s going to end up in the trash in a month. You want something that represents the quality of your own work.

Whether you need a dozen hats for a small residential crew or a bulk order of a hundred for a regional operation, we treat every order with the same level of care. We even work with organizations like the IBEW 210, creating high-contrast patches that stand out on the job site and give the crew a sense of unity and pride.

Let’s Get Your Crew Geared Up

If you’re tired of the "standard" hat options and you want something that actually stays put, I’d love to help you out. We can take your existing logo and turn it into a custom leatherette or acrylic patch that will make your team look like the pros they are.
